Oh, textbooks. How I loath thee.

Who loves 30-page chapter readings plus chapter questions and responses on top of that?  NOT ME!  In fact, I loathe textbooks.  (I can see all of the NCC professors cringing!)

I have never been a reader and I rarely cracked open my textbooks throughout my secondary and post-secondary schooling.  This isn't because I'm lazy, but it's because I am an auditory learner.  I figured if the teacher was going to lecture about each chapter, what was the point of me reading?  I made it through my classes just fine by listening.

Then, I started taking graduate classes 100 percent over the Internet.  Oh, yes, I was going to start reading those textbooks and writing chapter responses whether I liked it or not.  I no longer had an educator in front of me to listen to.  I then realized I had a problem that I needed to deal with immediately.

I never learned how to read my textbook, and I struggled initially.  The problem wasn't that I didn't understand the material, it was that I was taking in so much information that my brain was overwhelmed and I didn't know how to organize everything I was learning.

If you're like me and need advice, Northampton Community College has workshops available to students so they don't have to struggle. If you've already mastered textbook reading strategies, but have other learning problems, there is help for you as well.

If you missed the recent study skills marathons at the Main and Monroe campuses, you're in luck!

You can now enhance your study skills online with live, interactive web workshops that will be held online from February 23 to April 8. Topics covered include time and stress management, memory strategies, ten ways you can beat public speaking fear, tips for writing research papers, and more!

The dates and times will be posted on the Northampton NOW calendar.  To access each session, go to http://tinyurl.com/LOWNCC.  If you have any questions, call (610)861-5342.
